The Declaration Initiative Newman's Own Foundation

TDI identified the prime movers in each community: Tim MacIntosh and Emma Torres. Tim and Emma in turn chose one or two people to represent facets of the process of individual and community self-empowerment.

  • Tim McIntosh
  • Antonio Braswell
  • Emma Torres
  • Idolina Castro
  • Elisaeo Zamora

TDI paid the costs of production with a grant from Newman’s Own Foundation.

Welcome to Park West

In Durham NC, an entrepreneurial barber opens the door to economic opportunity for men leaving prison.

Meet Tim

Tim’s Barber School targets two problems he saw in his community: recidivism and a lack of economic opportunities for African American men.

Meet Antonio

Antonio served 18 years in prison for murder. There he met Tim, who was helping another inmate get into the barber school. Antonio soon realized that Park West offered a way out of the vicious cycle of prison and poverty and a chance to restart his life.

Welcome to Campesinos sin Fronteras

In Yuma Arizona, a former farmworker built a network of health promotion and advocacy that gives migrant laborers the tools to take charge of their own health and wellbeing.

Meet Emma

Emma Torres' husband died twenty years ago from exposure to pesticides in the fields. A young widow with two children, no English, and no skills, Emma built a health outreach program that is creating jobs and saving lives of hundreds of farmworkers today.

Meet Idolina

Idolina used to work in the fields. Becoming a promotora has empowered her to create a better future for herself and for her community.

Meet Elisaeo

Through the promotoras health outreach program started by Emma, a generation of Latino farmworkers like Elisaeo learn and teach each other how to save lives and thrive.
